Hannemann names six to cabinet

Honolulu Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann announced six cabinet
members Tuesday.
He named both a director and deputy director for the
Department of Planning and Permitting. The deputy director's
role will be
to streamline the permitting process.
Hannemann's new appointees:
- Henry Eng, director of the Department
of Planning and Permitting. Eng, president of HE Land
Planning Services, a landuse
consultant service, also worked 15 years for The Estate
of James Campbell.
- David K. Tanoue, deputy director
of the Department of Planning and Permitting. He has
been senior deputy attorney
with the Department of Corporation Counsel for the
past three years. Tanoue provided legal counsel for
DPP on projects
including the Outrigger Beach Walk, Hilton Hawaiian
Village Waikikian Tower and Wal-Mart and Sam's Club
on
Keeaumoku Street.
- Carrie K.S. Okinaga, corporation counsel.
Okinaga, a partner with Honolulu law firm McCorriston
Miller Mukai MacKinnon, practices in the areas of litigation
and employment law.
- Gordon J. Bruce, director of the Department
of Information Technology. Bruce is the owner and managing
member of
GJB & Associates, a Mililani information technology
consulting firm. He previously worked at The Estate
of James Campbell.
- Kanthi De Alwis, medical examiner.
De Alwis has been Honolulu's chief medical examiner
since 2001.
- William Walter Goodhue Jr., first
deputy medical examiner. Goodhue has held that position
since 2001.
More than 600 applications flowed into the mayor-elect's
transition office, with an average of about 20 applicants
per position.
Developer D.G. "Andy" Anderson and Christine
Camp Friedman, chairwoman of The Chamber of Commerce
of Hawaii,
oversaw the selection process.
Five search committees interviewed candidates and narrowed
down the choices, while Hannemann made the final selection.
Some of the positions, including corporation counsel,
are subject to confirmation by the Honolulu City Council.
